Daniel 1:8 NKJV:
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself…
We know Daniel as a great man of God. But how did he become great?
21st century America is dying. The people are crying for the arrival of great men and women of God – people like Martin Luther and John Wesley. These men were turn-around leaders, whom God used to turn the tide of sinfulness and godlessness in their day. Men like Deitrich Bonhoeffer stood against the evil in Germany under Hitler’s reign. Though he died a martyr’s death, his stance emboldened the persecuted church of his day.
But even more than needing great names on great stages, God is looking to you, me, and all the ordinary members of His Church to become powerfully great in our spheres of influence. This is the real hope of the world.
Here, Daniel is not great yet. He’s 16 and beginning his journey toward greatness. However, he displays a characteristic that is true about every great man and woman of God. He “purposed in his heart not to defile himself.” He decided to stay separate from the Babylonian way. He set boundaries. He made up his mind.
Two applications for us today: first, this act was premeditated. He determined his Godly conviction before he was faced with temptation. Second, this decision was personal. His parents were gone and couldn’t make this decision for him. There was no audience watching or admiring him for his actions. This was a private, independent, and personal resolve. “I’ve resolved to honor God!”
What is the Holy Spirit saying to you? What unresolved, unmade decision needs to be made now?
I will not defile my mind with ungodly entertainment.
I will not defile my body with sugar and unhealthy food.
I will not dishonor God any longer by being negative and critical.
Your world is awaiting a God representative with a made-up mind.
Prayer:
Father God, You chose for me to be born at this time and place. You knew my world would be corrupt and in need of a turn-around. I commit my life to becoming what You’ve called me to be. I purpose in my heart that I will not defile myself with the ways of the current culture. I desire to be a great man/woman of God for You, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
