To understand the power of our words, we need first to understand that our words are a gift. Out of all of God’s creation, we have been given the gift of communication through the spoken word. Our words have real power. There is quantum energy coming from our words that affects our environment. God spoke the world into existence by the power of His word (Hebrews 11:3). Our words are more than conversation from one person to the next—they have a profound impact, psychologically and physically, on all living things. The power of our words can affect one’s spirit in an effective way (Colossians 4:6) or a bad way (Proverbs 12:6). Words that are not life-giving can prompt old wounds and dampen our spirits. Life-giving words can build up a person. Remember, death (hurtful words) and life (encouraging words) are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). In Ephesians 4:29, Paul writes that when you build up a person, you are giving grace to those who hear.
Would you believe there are experiments in the science world measuring the impact of our words? It’s true!
Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese scientist, did one water experiment that I found remarkably interesting because our bodies comprise 80% water. In this experiment, he would have individuals speak into a container of water, freeze droplets, and then look at them under the high-powered microscope. This allowed him to look at water molecules and their reaction to the words spoken. In one container, he had individuals speak life-giving things, like, “I love you! You make me happy! You are so refreshing!” In the other container, he had individuals say hateful things like, “I hate you! You make me sick! You look awful!” The results were astounding.
Remember our words are a gift from God. Sometimes I think we do not even realize what is coming out of our mouths at times. For me, my mouth is most challenged in traffic. One day, we will all account for the words we speak or have spoken (Matthew 12:36).
I would love to leave you with this challenge. Get an eight-by-ten piece of paper and keep it on your being for 7 days. On this 8×10 paper, draw a line down the middle creating two columns. Title the first column “P.” Title the second column “N.” Every time you have a thought, or word, Positive or Negative, tally it in the appropriate column. If you are intentional with the exercise, I believe the results might surprise you.
You can do your experiment like Dr. Emoto right at home with rice. If you want to know more about this or see the results of these experiments, please feel free to visit my website to contact me at startyourjourney.net.
