The Power of our DNA

When I look into our skies at night and see the vastness of our universe with all the stars, planets, and galaxies, I am in complete awe of God’s handiwork and sovereignty, just like David in Psalm 19:1.

Hebrews 11:3 tells us, “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen” (NLT). I cannot help but see the parallels between this universe God created and the universe that He created inside us. Yes, I said universe. In the molecular world, there is a whole universe made up of several characters individually, each part having a purpose to show God’s glory.

To give you an example, let me tell you about a great children’s book that illustrates the vision perfectly. How many of you remember the book Horton Hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss? For those who do not know the story, it is about a community of animals peacefully living together in the jungle. One day, an elephant named Horton was walking along when suddenly he heard a noise. He discovered this noise came from a dust ball on top of a dandelion. After moving closer to the dust ball, he heard someone call out. This voice explained to Horton that there was a whole village that lived inside that dust ball, made up of characters, each with their own purpose. This voice was a scientist who believed there was more beyond his world, which led him to explore. Horton spent time speaking to this scientist about his world and was amazed that something so tiny could exist.

In the 1980s, Watson and Crick discovered the DNA double helix. Because of this great discovery, we now know more about the inner workings of our beings. As technology advanced, we were able to zoom in even more to see an entire village, just inside one cell. We now see characters working together as in a manufacturing plant, each character playing a different role but in harmony with all the others. It is miraculous. There is so much I can tell you about DNA, but it is amazing to see God’s detailed design in everyone. There is so much more we still do not know about the DNA that makes up our genetic expression.

I love to ponder on God’s design. God’s glory is so detailed as the perfectly fine tuning of our planets, to our DNA inside an individual cell. I find myself overwhelmed by the sovereignty of our Father. I am living because God spoke. He is the upholder of my life. Like David wrote in Psalm 54:4, may we never lose our wonder of the glory of God the Father!
